Pondicherry Case Pavilion
02-04 Asian City Project is an action by European Union to help Asian countries improve urban environment. This project asks an Asian city and at least two European cities to form groups in order to learn from the advanced European city management concepts. The project has been continued for 2 years, and the European countries and the EU take care of at most 65% of the project’s cost. In 2002, Pondicherry successfully formed group with Italy’s Urbino and France’s Villeneuve – Solo.
Pondicherry is exactly divided into two districts, a French colony and a Tamil traditional area. The French colony maintains architecture from the colonial era while the Tamil area has its own local architecture style. The two styles have influenced each other.
Pondicherry Pavilion’s design is inspired by the two contrasting and complementary areas. The Tamil district’s style is represented by the tiles on corridor rooftops, while the French colony style is represented by the gates popular in France. Pondicherry’s characteristics is conveyed to the audience through the splice of ceramic tiles on the floor and embodied in light columns.
In the Pondicherry Pavilion, there will also be a small store and a coffee shop. The coffee shop will provide Indian Pondicherry local desserts and snacks in both French and Tamil styles. The store will sell Pondicherry’s simple handicrafts as souvenirs. The souvenirs have the following labels: protecting Asian heritages. The store will also sell related publications.
