Hangzhou Case Pavilion
As various ancient Chinese poems have elaborated, Hangzhou has the most precious resource – its water environment. For thousands of years, Hangzhou residents have lived by the lake, and have the beautiful landscape as the backyard of their home.
The West Lake has amazing beautiful scenery and the gigantic Qian River tidal bores are world-renowned. The Grand Canal is a “national treasure”, and the Xixi Wetland is called “the kidney of the city”. Hangzhou Bay connects the East China Sea, and Hangzhou is a city with 5 water systems coexisting. Water is the root of Hangzhou, and its soul. For decades, Hangzhou follows “mediating 5 systems altogether” as water management concept, and created a highly habitable city with clean water, clear river, green riverbanks, and great sceneries. This was achieved through various conservation projects including those on the Xixi Wetland, the Grand Canal, Qiantang River and local waterways.
Through “mediating 5 systems altogether” city water control, Hangzhou successfully resisted the water pollution created by rapid development of modern cities, raised the quality of urban life, and extended Hangzhou’s charm. Hangzhou’s case of successful practices is a reference for the future development of cities.
