    Geneva-Zurich-Basel Case Pavilion

The three important Swiss cities Basel, Geneva and, each of which is watered by rivers or lakes, exemplify the close relationship between urban life and water. When facing urban water issues, Basel’s sustainable management of the Rhine River, Geneva’s successful efforts on the polluted Geneva Lake, Zürich’s innovative sewage disposal and treatment to shape a reliable water supply system have all become best practices in management and have been popularized in other cities around the world. 26 years ago, Zürich’s successful experience in modern water treatment was applied in Kunming, which has yielded highly desirable results. Around the 240-square-meter water basin inside the Pavilion, visitors can enjoy purified water and a natural gravel bed. Water fountains set in motion animate the scene and create a lively atmosphere.

Highlight 1: One entrance for each city – The three independent entrances of the pavilion give visitors access to the one and the same exhibition. Each entrance is dedicated to one of the three cities. Thus, the respective identity and uniqueness of the cities of Basel, Geneva and Zürich are emphasized from the start. The visitors are guided through the exhibition on three intertwined walkways. This gives concrete expression to the cooperation and interaction between the cities. Three walkways increase the pavilion’s visitor capacity enormously. They also make the visitors an integral design element in the exhibition’s staging. The construction itself is an architectural icon of the three Swiss cities, which distinguishes them from other exhibitors. On the ground level, visitors receive basic information on the topic “Water and Quality of Urban Life”. Over and above this, each city uses one of the aforementioned modules to emphasize its own unique aspects. Facts, charts and illustrations are used to graphically present information about the corresponding processes, technologies and facilities. The exhibition has been designed to appeal to a public with different levels of pre-existing knowledge and diverse information needs.

Hightlight 2: 360-degree panorama – A circular screen is suspended above the walkways. The inner surface of this 360-degree panorama illustrates the relationship between clean water and a high quality of life. Living near to water enhances people’s sense of well-being. Images and films serve to illustrate this point. After viewing the exhibition, interested members of the general public as well as specialists will find further documentation on the topic “Water and Quality of Urban Life” (CDs, information sheets, pamphlets, etc.) at the information desk. The auditorium is intended for lectures and symposiums for special groups of visitors such as city authorities and experts. It offers an opportunity for presentations that expand on specific aspects of the topic. The applicant cities of Basel, Geneva and Zürich are also interested in contributing to the planned events on the UBPA general platform. Conceivable, for instance, is a symposium for experts on the topic “Water and Quality of Urban Life”.

There are another two attractions in store for visitors to the Basel, Geneva and Zürich pavilion. For the enjoyment of the visitors, a decorative fountain has been installed in the centre of thehall. In addition, guests receive a refreshing cool drink of water.
