Hunan Pavilion
Hunan Pavilion
The pavilion looks like a Mobius strip. The review of Hunan’s history and vision of future projected on the strip imply mankind’s endless pursuit. Among sections named Nature, Future and Human Culture, the first two show the local scenery and imagine the future cities – an “urban Shangri-La” featuring ecological protection, pleasant environment, energy recycling and sustainable development; the remaining one allows children think freely about future cities in games.
The Hunan Pavilion in Expo 2010 features a fine collection of natural beauty and cultural tradition special to the province. Visitors will see bamboo, hibiscus plants, Dongting Lake, the Land of Peach Blossoms, Cai Lun’s papermaking technique, Yuan Longping’s hybrid rice, the artworks of Qi Baishi, and many other things originating in Hunan. With the theme “Land of Peach Blossoms”, the Hunan Pavilion endeavors to build a model of eco-friendly cities. Merging the ecological and peaceful sentiment of the countryside with the civilization and convenience of the city into an organic whole, such an eco-friendly city would realize the coexistence of mankind and the environment in harmony.
Seen from afar, the pavilion looks like a sculpture, which stands above green grass and clear water and is surrounded by a bamboo forest. The unique shape of the Hunan Pavilion instantly piques visitors’ curiosity. Someone says, “The shape of the architecture looks so familiar. What is it?” Suddenly, another voice is heard, “The Mobius Band!” “Exactly, it is a Mobius Band!” Eventually, more and more visitors discover this in amazement.

Shanghai Pavilion
Shanghai Pavilion
Taking the form of Shikumen, Shanghai Pavilion features simple design but profound implication, plain appearance but modern taste, perfectly matching the city’s characteristics of combination of decency and diversity, blending of history and modernism, and meeting of the East and the West. Themed as “New Horizons Forever,” it demonstrates a more charming, harmonious and intelligent Shanghai through the external walls, waiting room and interior space.
