    Sichuan Pavilion

The two-layer structure is based on the special landscape of Sichuan. The circular wall of internal layer with 3D ecological images is encircled by the modern hyperboloid-shaped external one, embodying the harmonious coexistence of cities and nature. The history and culture of Jinsha Sunbirds lead visitors into a secluded, beautiful and harmonious world. The three sections display Sichuan’s urban history and civilization, the wisdom of “following the law of nature” and wonderful future.

The exhibition develops a picture of Sichuan’s cultural heritage such as the Sanxingdui site, which boasts rich cultural relics and whose history can be dated back more than 3000 years. Also displayed will be the Jinsha archaeological site and the Dujiangyan irrigation project. In the 18,000-square-meter exhibition hall surrounding the China Pavilion, provinces and municipalities will showcase their time-honored cultures and customs.

The first section of pavilion depicts the province’s history, which can be traced back 3,000 years at its Sanxingdui and Jinsha archeological sites. Design of the pavilion’s entrance was inspired by a sunbird relic unearthed in Jinsha in 2001 thought to be used in sun worship by ancient Chinese. The symbol is now protected by the State Administration of Cultural Heritage. Another section of the pavilion displays architecture and other aspects of Sichuan life such as its local tea and liquor.

Spirits and tea are important to Sichuanese, reflected in the tea pouring performances at the pavilion and displays about Wuliangye and Luzhou Laojiao liquors, both of which won gold medals at the Panama-Pacific International Exposition in 1915. To many visitors, the most stunning treasure in the pavilion is a 6 kg pure gold plate depicting pandas and hibiscus flowers. It is decorated with hundreds of precious stones. Designed by master craftsman Ni Chengyu, it celebrates the success, peace and harmony of the province.

Screens on a wall at the pavilion show the intangible cultural heritage of Sichuan as well as its rivers, food and drama. Another section shows the economic development of the province – from ancient tea routes, the southern Silk Road and on to its role as the transportation hub of western China. Today Sichuan is also one of China’s most important industrial centers for metallurgy, mining, chemicals, machinery, aerospace and electronics.
