    Inner Mongolia Pavilion

The Inner Mongolia Pavilion pavilion depicts a grassland civilization in urban development and manifests various elements of the grassland culture with unique exhibition items. The floor consisting of three kinds of sand manifests the Inner Mongolian people’s wisdom; the contrast between the earliest nomadic habitation and modern cities shows the course of grassland city development in history; the huge tree of quicksand implies environmental changes and expresses the ideal of turning deserts into oases. Visitors can also have a virtual grassland journey on mountain bikes.

The Inner Mongolia pavilion looks quite different to the drawings on the official Expo sites. It is hard to know why that is, but at least many of the main ideas are preserved, such as the circular cinema with loosely woven sections in the fabric the movies are projected on, allowing for dramatic appearances of live singers in folk costumes from Inner Mongolia.

The concept underpinning the pavilion is the development of grassland cities from their traditional nomadic culture to a more modern urbanity, or, as the official theme states: “Prairie Civilisation in Urban Development.” Grassland and sand from the Gobi desert acts as the backdrop of the pavilion, where different cultural and natural aspects of the region are highlighted to paint a picture of a brave and enduring people, and a close-knit society. Two of the natural aspects that have been given a prominent place in the pavilion, are the mongolian horses, and the Huyang tree.

The wildness, the bravery and the endurance of the people of Inner Mongolia, often associated with the belligerence evident throughout Mongolian history, are now seen as strengths of the modern man, traits that together with the fellowship of the tribe, help create an entrepreneurial spirit, that combines with social ties and responsibilities.
